Not only did I grow up in a Christian home, but I also grew up in a missionary home. I was in my first foreign country before I was even 2, as my parents attended language school in Costa Rica. I grew up as an MK, (missionary kid), in the countries of Peru and Ecuador.
Up until the age of 7, I had assumed that, since my parents were “saved,” and since I knew the Gospel story backwards and forwards, and since I knew a lot of the Bible, (in 2 languages), that I was sort of automatically saved. Then I heard an evangelist, who ministered to children, tell me that it was necessary that each of us personally communicate with God and personally place our trust in Christ as our Savior. The next day, as we took the evangelist up the Amazon in a wooden boat to the next village, a storm appeared on the horizon. I began to think about the eternal future of each of the occupants of that little boat. I thought about what would happen to me were I to drown in the storm, especially since I had never personally accepted what Christ had done for me on the cross. At that moment, I went to the front of the boat, next to the chains and anchor, and I prayed to accept Christ, personally.
During my high school years I was able to participate in numerous outreach ministries in Peru, Ecuador, and the United States. While in college, I was part of a soccer team that carried out sports evangelism to Africa and Europe.
After college, I had the privilege of going on several short-term missions assignments. During the years that I was working in the computer industry, God opened up the opportunity to go to the country of Nicaragua on several short-term trips to help teach discipleship and counseling to pastors there.
From the age of 10, when I dedicated my life to serve the Lord, wherever and however He wanted me to, I have wanted to serve Him “full-time.” When Carol and I met, one of the things that we had in common was that we both wanted to work in missions. For several years, God chose to have us live and work in the United States. Although at the time we didn’t understand what God was doing, looking back, I can now see how God was preparing us in areas that we didn’t realize would be helpful in our future ministry.
The truth is, Carol and I had assumed that, if God opened the door to foreign missions, it would be to Mongolia or India. I’m not really sure why it never occurred to me that God might call us back to the area of the world where I had grown up- the Amazon jungle region of Peru. It took the tragic death of some missionary friends that were ministering on that field, to change our focus to that part of the world. God then used our family’s 2 and a half years of service in the Upper Amazon of Peru to confirm to us that He wanted us to return there as career missionaries.
